My good friend (and sometimes housemate) Luke is in Auckland teaching yoga. He's a great guy and I think you'd all get along. Luke can be a little, um, not quite shy, but not quite outgoing either. He's funny, kind, generous and easy to be around. He's got this cool combo of tattooed rocker meets bikram chill. You're gonna love him like I do because you're all good peeps.

Anyway, Luke is in town for a couple more months and you should take the time to do something fun with him. Go on a hike, hit the beach, get some dinner, go see some band, whatever. Invite Luke, you won't regret it.

I'm urging him to join tribe now so it makes the connecting all that much easier.

Thanks and miss you!!
It will be the last chance to see the out of town mates before I take off on an extended road trip around Oz Sept 3rd, with the plan to surround myself with pirates and beaches while uncovering the world’s deepest mysteries. I have taken off Mon for extended visits from ya’ll. Make sure the crew knows, I don’t have everyone’s number. Woop!

P.S. If you are coming and are down to help me get 3 awesome DJs (which are setting me back $500), and are willing to contribute $10-20. Let me know.

THE ART OF FREEDOM
An Interdisciplinary Arts Conference

August 28, 2008
Black Rock City, Nevada

How can we recognize, articulate, and navigate the politics of art and freedom? What are the roles of our communities, cultures, and societies in enabling or restricting arts and freedoms? What freedoms are needed to enable artistic expression? What limitations do we struggle against to achieve artistic freedom? How can freedom be experienced as a form of art? Can art create freedom?

THE ART OF FREEDOM is an Interdisciplinary Arts Conference that will take place on August 28, 2008 in Black Rock City, Nevada at Burning Man (www.burningman.com). Scholars and creative thinkers from all levels of education and experience are invited to submit proposals for panel presentations. Conference sessions will typically consist of panels of three 20-minute paper presentations, but we are also open to proposals with creative and unusual presentation formats (feel free to think outside the box!)

Possible presentation topics might include (but are not limited to):

* Inquiries related to Art, Freedom, and the “American Dream.”
* Considerations of Burning Man and its relation to culture, society, law, or politics.
* Discussions of specific Burning Man Art installations or projects.
* Presentations on censorship in relation to artistic freedom.
* Proposals for new directions in activism related to art and freedom.
* Explorations of the relationships between subcultural expression and “mainstream” cultures.

These are just a few sample topics – we are open to considering any presentation that offers an engaged and/or creative approach to the conference theme.

The conference will be hosted by Freedomcommunity at Burning Man, and all participants should be familiar with the unique conditions of the Black Rock City environment. Note that the minimum cost for attending Burning Man is over $300, so participants should already have plans to attend the festival or should be prepared to embrace the festival in its fullness.

For more information, please contact David Higgins, Glaukopis Conference Coordinator: (glaukopisproject@gmail.com).

Abstracts of 250 words should be sent to (glaukopisproject@gmail.com) no later than June 30, 2008.

Notification will be sent regarding accepted proposals in early July.

Hi all.

Since we couldn't be everywhere all the time... Paul and I would be keen to source as much extra material from the KB community as possible - be they photos or videos - to add to our footage haul for the doco. Preferably in as high quality resolution as possible - I dunno if the stuff on youtube is at reduced quality or not, likewise Flickr - and I don't think it matters what format; so long as it is digital, we can probably do something with it.

People who have already posted photos and vids: are you happy with us using them? Do you have them in higher resolution?

Since we have no money, we can offer nothing beyond some kind of credit in the, er, credits. So usage of any extra footage would be a gifting thing. Also, there is no guarantee we will use anything in particular - the whole process is a bit like panning for gold, methinks, but there are likely to be some nuggets out there... and the more we have the better the end result will be Smile

Hello lovely Kiwiburners,

For those that don't know, a few words about weather are in order.

Last year is was hot with a super powerful sun during the day, and cooler at night but pleasant. It rained for a few hours on two nights. There were lots of sandflies. The wind was not super strong, but it was strong enough to temporarily wreck a less than well secured structure.

For those visiting from overseas, protecting yourself from the sun and sandflies are very important. If you go the bare skin route, you can wear lots of sunscreen and bug spray. You can also wear lightweight long sleeves and legs and keep your feet and ankles covered, and thus beat both the sun and the sandflies.

If you get sandfly bites, try this stuff. Best rubbed in thoroughly as soon after the bite as possible. All natural and helps a lot.
http://www.potofgoldbalm.co.nz/skinbalm.html

Of course don't forget the dry bag of clothing, in case it rains.

Of course the kiwis say that you can get all 4 seasons in one day. As far as I can tell, they don't really prepare for any of them, just roll with it and have a good time!

If you haven't given any thought to your morphie yet, NOW is the time to do so. Kiwiburn starts three weeks from today!

Howdy all,
So the first ever Kiwiburn Work Weekend has come and gone and was a
tremendous success.

A big THANK YOU goes out to the crew who came from Wellington..Wendy,
Johnathan, Jezz, Rich and Polly and the Auckland crew Sam, Karl, Lilly,
Poppy, Linus, Dave, Jen, Ants, Shelley, Kyla, Hidive, Ingrid, Jamie
and Eric the couch surfing Californian.
Jack and Jen arrived from Tauranga midday Sunday with cold beers and confirmed the Fire Camp location..same as last year so lots of fire spinning and breathing fun in the Village Square.

For some of the crew it was their first visit to Whakamaru and the
weather worked with us all weekend including rain only on the Friday
night/early Saturday morning, glorious and hot sunshine during the
days, an amazing sunset on Saturday night and a complete fog out for
those that stayed the distance through till dawn Sunday (some one has
to keep vigil during the night while most of us sleep)

Projects achieved...
Grubbing of the thistles, which gave everyone a chance to wander the
paddocks digging and hacking at the prickly bastards and take in once
again the majestic and peace full place that we have to play on.
Painting of the toilet block, not the easiest of jobs as they are
rough texture plastered concrete block work and even armed with fluffy
rollers and 4 inch brushes it was a mission but the result was out
standing. There is still the mens toilets to paint for which we might
bring a spray unit down next time just so we can have more time to
play...
Village Planning, lots and lots of discussion as to what goes where,
like the large sound camps, theme camps and general and quiet camping
zones.Community craft and village square location, where the Man and
the Temple will be placed, allowing access for the Volunteer Fire
Brigade and many more other considerations.

We also had a meet up, on Saturday, with Tina Jakes who is Taupo
District Councils, Mangakino Community Manager. She is a great lady
and fully supports what we Kiwiburners are doing as far as the
festival goes as well as our general community involvement. The
Council supplied the paint and some brushes for the toilet block.

Kirsty Truman from SLAM (Sports and Leisure Association of Mangakino)
visited on Sunday and we had a great introductory meeting and she
outlined their involvement in the Domain in regards to the Motor Cross
tracks that will be established there next year. SLAM is also taking
over part, if not the whole less of the Domain when Keven Harrison's
(the present holder of the lease and farmer of the Domain) lease runs
out in May 2008. Kirsty is also very supportive of Kiwiburn and can
see us both collaborating well together.

So folks all and all a very successful weekend and a bonus for some of
the city dwellers to get out onto our beautiful land and soak it up
even if we had to negotiate the lagre amount of fresh cow pads
lovingly placed by the beasties.
We will have another Work Weekend hopefully in early January so stay
tuned for updates.

See you at the Burn
"2008 ART THEME: AMERICAN DREAM

This year's art theme is about patriotism -- not that kind which freights the nation state with the collective weight of ego, but a patriotism that is based upon a love of country and culture. Leave ideology at home; forget the blue states and the red; let parties, factions and the so-called issues that divide us fall away. Flag burning or flag worship play no part in this year's theme. Ask yourself, instead, a more immediate question. What has America achieved that you admire or feel proud of? What has it done or failed to do that makes you feel dismayed? Put blame aside, in this election year, and dare to ask an even greater question: What can postmodern America, this stumbling, roused, half-conscious giant, yet give to the world?"

I don't know whether to laugh or cry.

From reading many tribe threads ...

Like last years theme when announced many are hoping its a Hacker Prank.

I think its real.

While many of you are out enjoying yourselves on the playa, several of us left behind got together and threw a 'we're not going to burning man' party, a.k.a. Melting Man, down here on the South Island. Small, impromptu, and yet loads of fun. Here's my report:

"I can't quite recall how the idea began. I think it started when several of the Kiwiburn ExCom members started talking about their upcoming trip to the playa for Burning Man, and someone said, 'Hey, we should have a We're Not Going To Burning Man' party for those of us left behind.

What’s the counter to Burning Man you ask? Why, Melting Man, of course!

The idea was to find a snowy paddock up in the mountains, throw a party, build a snowman, and then burn it. Apparently there are videos on YouTube demonstrating how this can be done.

Jonathan booked a DJ gig in Christchurch for the weekend of Aug 25th which coincided with the opening of the Burning Man festival in Nevada. Several of the Wellingtonians decided to make a winter holiday of it and booked their tickets down to the South Island. Cass and Jeremy came in from Oz.

First stop: Kathy & Bruce's International Burner Hostel where we comfortably accommodated our seven guests. We had a small house party before going out to listen to Jonathan dj at Nitrate. Dressed in our shiniest finest, we got down in the living room to some of JetPilot's groovey tunes, spinning the hula hoops and enjoying some cocktails.

We booked ourselves into the Flock Hill Station Lodge & Backpackers which is located about 100 km (an hour+ drive) from Christchurch up near Arthur's Pass. We loaded up the van and cars with a complete sound system, car port, hula hoops, and snow gear and the crew headed up to the mountains on Sunday and Monday.

The lodge & backpackers is located on a working farming station of several thousand acres, farming mainly sheep and some cattle and deer. The backpackers & lodge is situated on approx two acres. Usually during this time of year, the valleys are covered in snow. However, it’s been a dry season, and while some of the ski fields were open for operation, the lower parts of the mountains and the valleys were not under snow. Jase, the affable manager at the backpackers agreed to let us have our party up on The Knoll, located on the property and about a 10 minute walk beyond the lodge. We’d be able to play as loud and for as long as we’d like.

We borrowed 'Susie', the 4WD vehicle belonging to the Station and loaded up all the gear and drove up to the site and set up the car port and DJ gear. The Knoll was perfect. Gorgeous, stunning views of the surrounding valleys and an alpine lake. Those that went skiing that day managed to abscond with two precious large bags of snow which we used to build our melting man!

The party kicked off around 9 pm with the twelve of us (Jodi, Wendy, Joel, Jonathan, Jez, Andrea, Tara, Bruno, Cass, Jeremy, Bruce, & myself). We stopped by the backpackers and invited them all; eight or ten showed up.

We illuminated our man, decorated him in some shiny, turned on the black light, and danced the hours away. The Green Fairy represented with some absinthe; Wendy brought the most excellent PSI hoop which razzled and dazzled; DJ's Helix and Jet Pilot delighted us all. The full moon was resplendent and cast a beautiful glow onto the Knoll; the stars shone brightly. We didn't feel the chill. We were excited, we were having a party, we were not at burning man!

Sadly, but for safety reasons, we were not allowed to light our man on fire. But that was okay, for we allowed the natural elements to melt him away. He was headless by the next morn!

We had a relatively quiet next day with some folks skiing/boarding and some folks relaxing at the cabin. We chilled and played games, cooked yummy food and imbibed wine and beer.

We parted on Wednesday. Cass & Jeremy and Andrea & Jez were carrying on to the West Coast. The remaining five of us embarked on a several hour hike through the Station to view the Broken River falls. The signage to the falls was not the best and we ended up bushwhacking our way through some thickets. Through the fields, past the stock, and up the valley, we arrived at the falls. A short rest for snacks and photo taking and then we made our way back to the lodge and then drove home to Christchurch where we ended the trip with a fine meal at His Lordships Café & Bar.

Melting Man – the ‘we’re not going to burning man’ party of the southern hemisphere. Yeah, this could be the start of a new tradition. Thanks everyone for your vision and willingness to make this happen. It was loads of fun. Same time next year?"

For those of you lucky ones who will be making it to the playa this year, there will be a special "Kiwi" reunion of sorts taking place on Tuesday night.

Details straight from our BM Regional Rep, Mark 'Yonderman' Stirling:

" There might not be as many kiwis going over this year (I might be the only one of the Welly burners going), but this time Auckland is providing most of the Kiwiburners heading over. As in previous years we plan to hold a kiwi gathering one of the nights at BM. We have had two fun ones in the past that were "Club Crawls", but last years one basically became a major cat herding effort. Thank the burner gods that Taniwha had a led tourist flag for us all to follow!!!

This year we are going to wrap the gathering into the form of a party at the International burner camp. So at 7PM on the TUESDAY of BURNINGMAN O7 please come to the INTERNATIONAL BURNER CAMP at 6 OCLOCK and ESTUARY(near centre camp) and be the kiwi contingent of the Zombie parade!!

People will be hanging out, drinking etc and then getting zombie makeup on and heading out on a rampage. There will already be about a dozen kiwis at the International camp, so its the logical place for our gathering. Bring drink or whatever and be prepared for a good night of partying and zombie rampaging. Thanks to Kiwi for saying yes to this."

Check it out!

Greetings All,

I haven't been to Burning Man, and I didn't get to Kiwiburn this year.

I have followed the Burning Man culture via friends and online for a bout 10 years now. I am delighted that it happens, that people go, especially people I know. One of the big reasons I don't go is a total unwillingness to subject myself to uncomfortable (for me) noise levels for several days in a row. I have no moral issue against noise, just a nervous system that is quickly fried if I don't get to rest it when I need to.

I don't think I am alone in this as it seems part of the cultural norm to have to 'recover' after a burn.

OK, that is fine for fit young single people who have no dependants to care for, who can afford to party large for a few days no matter the consequences. It is not OK for, lets see, lots of older people I know, children, lots of people I know caring for children, people with health related disabilities, people with hearing disabilities. Etc.......

So, my question is this and I have no vested interest in the answer. Is the burn culture largely for fit young white self seeking single people (or people who wish they were) who consider creative expression and freedom synonymous with the ability to generate and need to tolerate random loud noise at any time of the day or night?

Just curious. I can't see anything directly about this in the official literature.

So I made a random comment and people seem keen. I don't even know what Camp Nuclear Bass is yet. Another music camp is just another music camp. How about some attempt to cause physical liquification without causing permanent hearing loss?

But I've too much planned in for KB08 already. So if anyone wants to take this idea on, go for it.

This started out in my blog last night: http://people.tribe.net/bscanlon/blog/35900752-2c8b-49b7-88da-832b8aee1218#08c01a1a-9277-43ad-9d08-6f6aa42ed4aa

Within 2 and a half years Kathy and I will have organised a christchurch based burning man regional. It has already started, now we are going public. This is sort of the window between kiwiburn 2008, kiwiburn 2009, and a half year after that into later 2009. I reckon it will take that long to build a local core community to make it happen. If energy builds even faster and it happens earlier that would be great!

I think it will not be in summer, because there are many festivals then already, including kiwiburn! There are also the many fire bans around Canterbury to consider. April looks like a good month to think about, after reading this. http://www.ccc.govt.nz/quickanswers/BylawsLicensing/Fires/F105.asp

Early April- Easter weekend: could call it Southern Cross?

Mid April- ANZAC: BurnZac?

June- Queen's Birthday: Queen's Burn Day?

Christ Burn?

Church Burn?

Questions, comments, suggestions, participation much appreciated!

If there are any past present or future burners out there in Canterbury or the larger south island let's hear from you!

Love you all,

Hello lovely kiwiburners,

I am embarking on an amazing voyage of discovery and activity-- becoming a "publisher" for the information being spread at alternative workshops. We are going to be hosting a workshop by an amazing presenter on 24 & 25 March. Highly recommended. If you know someone who might be interested, please let them know. The information is below, written by the presenter. Soon there will be a wee story of how this all came to pass on my tribe blog :-)

Connecting to Ones Enlightened self
(The irony being that when we become enlightened, there is no Self)
Enlightenment, Ascension, God Self, True self, Ones Truth, Unity, Oneness, Being, Presence, Heaven, Home, Higher Self, Incarnation of Goddess… Whatever……… The One that is at One with The One…….

These are all different flavours of the one state or one being, You, Me, Us. On some level we all know this, well, how about experiencing it, or being it. All That Is.

When this happens world-wide (and it will…) then all the Political, Social and Environmental problems will naturally resolve. It is our highest service to allow ourselves to be there, here, and everywhere, so let’s support each other in this.
We can do this ourselves by learning to raise our vibration, or frequency. Calming our mind and dissolving and transmuting our resistance, blocks, and all that stuff…. is good too. This can be simple and great fun and feels beautiful and uplifting, peaceful, empowering and humbling.

The facilitator, Sion, has been working and playing with techniques for raising ones vibration, connecting with ascended energies, accepting and transcending the blocks, and taking oneself to an enlightened state for many years. He is pretty good at it too. He is now also opening to the Grace and is being asked to be a Vessel for the Grace. He is thus is in the process of connecting with Enlightenment and would like to offer this by getting his self out of the way for a moment or two and allowing the grace to transmit to you.

Enlightenment is a Neuro-Biological shift in the Brain and The Energy systems.

The Keys for Freedom from the old “stuff’ (which you probably already know…) and creating a Life of Flow will also be offered. The subtle differences between Enlightenment and God Realisation will also be discussed and played with.

About The Facilitator:
Sion Richard A Windelov is a Minister (BA of Divinity) and a Reiki Master and has several other bits of paper too (somewhere…). He has been teaching in the fields of Body, Mind and Spirit since the age of 24, which was back in 94. A Channel for The Ascended Masters for many years, and a Earth healer who has travelled extensively, helping Gaia and family, to ease through this worldwide transformation as gracefully as possible. A Shaman, Spiritual councillor and Medical Intuitive, Sion has helped many people heal themselves, find their truth, and begin to really live it! Born in The Southern Alps of New Zealand, he has a 3 year old son, who has helped him ground greatly and is teaching him many things.
