I know there are some spiritual burners out there, so wanted to pass this on as I won't be able to go.

The Dalai Lama is coming to NZ and will be giving talks in both Auckland and Wellington on June 17/18/19.

This is a rare chance to see such a magnificent man. Bruce & I had the pleasure of attending a lecture he did in San Francisco a few years back. He is charming and humble and inspirational.

I'm really happy to see such a positive response to this post. Whoever gets to go, will you let me know how it was? I'd love to hear others' feedback on the lecture.

          Thanks!

so went to go see the Dalai Lama talk yesterday with 10,000 other people! His talk was very simple and he did not go into much detail, but then i guess i shouldve expected that seeing as it was an event with a wide range of people (and the fact that he is a simple man). It was still really nice to see him though and listen to him talk. He wore this funny little red hat so that the bright lights wouldnt hurt his eyes haha and he made Dick Hubbard (or rather he did it himself) look like a bit of an idiot which was pretty funny.

I did really like how he said that peace needs to begin with youreself, once youve done/found that, you can extend this on to your family and slowly affect a wider range of people. How can you truly spread the idea of peace when you are not even able to do it yourself..

Hi Hana! Thanks for the report. I was in some ways not utterly enlightened after I once saw the Dalai Lama, but did in fact get a couple of good nuggets from it.

Yeah, that's good, that's the way to go-- start with the self, let it spread outward. Be the change you want to see in the world. This is how this change is going to happen, not from the top down, but from all of us on the bottom, individual spots, spreading out, connecting, being examples :-)

Gecko and I went to his all-day seminar yesterday on The Four Noble Truths. We were both pretty disappointed to hear that they were all about suffering... Not the peace, love, happiness sorta stuff we were expecting.
I also found that I was not "utterly enlightened" by the end of it.
I picked up a couple of things, but think I would have been better off going to his first (and short) talk in Auckland.
One thing that made me really sad about the whole thing, was that we were all trapped inside in the dark, while outside it was a gorgeous warm sunny day. Lunch-time was great :)

Thanks guys for your sharing experiences seeing the D.L.

I am bummed that his lecture/talk wasn't more uplifting. When I saw him in 2003, the focus of his speech was on happiness which is much more easier to sit through than listening to a speech on suffering! The main points of his speech then -- the way to achieve happiness is through compassion, affection, self-reliance and forgiveness. I found it quite meaningful.

D.L. is a funny guy. He was relating some story about what to do if faced with someone pointing a gun at you. He said "RUN"! and then giggled his little giggle.

Hana - I like that part about peace begins with yourself. I'm a firm believer in that!

yea its funny whn he tells stories about himself. He told us about when he got angry at his pet parrot when he was young and tried to hurt it and then he just cracked up laughing, adjusted his hat and scratched his face haha

Aww man, we didn't get any funny stories...
Got to hear him giggle a fair bit though. He has a very melodious laugh and everytime he did it I smiled so hard....
                              Such a sweet man :)
