For those of you lucky ones who will be making it to the playa this year, there will be a special "Kiwi" reunion of sorts taking place on Tuesday night.

Details straight from our BM Regional Rep, Mark 'Yonderman' Stirling:

" There might not be as many kiwis going over this year (I might be the only one of the Welly burners going), but this time Auckland is providing most of the Kiwiburners heading over. As in previous years we plan to hold a kiwi gathering one of the nights at BM. We have had two fun ones in the past that were "Club Crawls", but last years one basically became a major cat herding effort. Thank the burner gods that Taniwha had a led tourist flag for us all to follow!!!

This year we are going to wrap the gathering into the form of a party at the International burner camp. So at 7PM on the TUESDAY of BURNINGMAN O7 please come to the INTERNATIONAL BURNER CAMP at 6 OCLOCK and ESTUARY(near centre camp) and be the kiwi contingent of the Zombie parade!!

People will be hanging out, drinking etc and then getting zombie makeup on and heading out on a rampage. There will already be about a dozen kiwis at the International camp, so its the logical place for our gathering. Bring drink or whatever and be prepared for a good night of partying and zombie rampaging. Thanks to Kiwi for saying yes to this."

Check it out!

  • YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

    That is all.
    • Yay! Yay!

I didn't get the bit about Taniwha - it sounded like you were following a mythical water creature around the playa. But I guess it's someone's name?

Yes, Taniwha is one of the burners. Hails from Dunedin and wasn't able to make it to Kiwiburn this year.

I'd only run into the word 'taniwha' in a maori book I was reading recently. For the curious:

"In Māori mythology, Taniwha are beings that live in deep pools in rivers, dark caves, or in the sea, especially in places with dangerous currents or deceptive breakers. The word 'taniwha' is also used to refer in a complimentary way to chiefs. The famous saying of the Tainui people of the Waikato district plays on this double meaning: Waikato taniwha rau 'Waikato of a thousand chiefs'"

I guess you could say Paul was our taniwha chief last year!!!
