Hello lovely Kiwiburners,
For those that don't know, a few words about weather are in order.
Last year is was hot with a super powerful sun during the day, and cooler at night but pleasant. It rained for a few hours on two nights. There were lots of sandflies. The wind was not super strong, but it was strong enough to temporarily wreck a less than well secured structure.
For those visiting from overseas, protecting yourself from the sun and sandflies are very important. If you go the bare skin route, you can wear lots of sunscreen and bug spray. You can also wear lightweight long sleeves and legs and keep your feet and ankles covered, and thus beat both the sun and the sandflies.
If you get sandfly bites, try this stuff. Best rubbed in thoroughly as soon after the bite as possible. All natural and helps a lot.

Of course don't forget the dry bag of clothing, in case it rains.
Of course the kiwis say that you can get all 4 seasons in one day. As far as I can tell, they don't really prepare for any of them, just roll with it and have a good time!

Ones that big don't normally leave their home in the inaccessible West Coast mountains. Their young fly down to the rest of NZ to breed and bite people. -

Sat, January 12, 2008 - 12:26 PMThanks for the warnings. Time to go repack! I've heard that dark colors are a sandfly attractant. So to keep all clothing light in color. Is it true, are light colors helpful? -

Re: Weather and sandflies
Tue, January 15, 2008 - 4:12 PMThat's what they say, light colors, for sandflies, mosquitos, bees... I reckon it's pretty general advice. Light colors are certainly good at keeping you cooler if you are wearing long sleeves and legs and whatnot....? I reckon coverage is more important than color :-) -
